For the first time in its history, the Festival presents Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings, a song cycle conducted here by David Zinman and featuring two artists in their Festival debuts: tenor Paul Appleby and Berlin Philharmonic Principal Horn Stefan Dohr. Guitarist Meng Su makes her Festival debut performing another work by Britten, the Nocturnal after John Dowland, and she and Appleby join forces for Dowland’s moving “Come, Heavy Sleep.” The Orion String Quartet closes the program with a tour de force by Schubert: the “Death and the Maiden” Quartet.
